  • Frédéric Benhamou (LINA) is Professor in Computer Science at the University of Nantes where he heads the CNRS ICT research cluster AtlanSTIC. His work is in the field of Decision Support and Optimization, where he has made seminal contributions on continuous constraint programming. He co-edited several books and journal special issues, and is the author of a number of scientific articles, two of which counting more than 300 citations. He participated in six European projects and a network of excellence. He was Program chair of CP 2006 and Area chair of ECAI 2008. He has been providing expertise for various international agencies and is a board member of Informatics Europe
  • Albert Benveniste (INRIA-Rennes, Project Coordinator) is Directeur de Recherche at INRIA, Rennes. CNRS Silver Medal 1990, IEEE Fellow 1991, Grand Prix France Telecom of the French Academy of Sciences 2008. Member of the scientific advisory boards of Safran group and France Telecom. Albert Benveniste co-founded and is Scientific Director of the Alcatel-Lucent / INRIA joint research lab. He has made important contributions to digital communications by proposing one of the first two algorithms for blind equalization (IEEE Trans on Automatic Control best paper 1980), to system identification in control science (co-authoring the book "Adaptive systems and stochastic approximations"), he was co-inventor of the Signal synchronous language for safety critical embedded systems development in computer science. AB's interests also include vibration mechanics and Web services and network autonomic management.
  • Claude Berrou (Telecom Bretagne), Member of the French Académie des Sciences, IEEE Richard Hamming medal 2003, Grand Prix France Télécom de l'Académie des sciences 2003, Marconi prize 2005, IEEE Fellow 2008. In collaboration with Prof. Alain Glavieux, he introduced the concept of probabilistic feedback into error correcting decoders and developed a new family of quasi-optimal error correction codes, that he nicknamed turbo codes. He also pioneered the extension of the turbo principle to joint detection and decoding processing, known today as turbo-detection and turbo-equalization. He is now strongly involved in research on computational Intelligence.
  • Jean-Louis de Bougrenet de la Tocnaye (Telecom Bretagne), is a specialist in liquid crystals, diffractive optics and their applications to optics and telecommunications. Creator and CEO of the Optogone company, he was awarded in 2001 by Anvar (special prize), received the CapitalIT and Cambridge Entrepreneurship in 2002. He also co-funded the Lyxis (2006), Holotetrix (2007) and Eyes3shut (2009) companies and received the Technical achievement SPIE Award in 2006.
  • Christian Brosseau (LabSTICC) has published over 140 refereed journal articles on a wide variety of theoretical and experimental topics and presented over 90 papers at conferences. He is an OSA Fellow, a Fellow of the Electromagnetics Academy, and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He has also written two books. His research interests include applied optics, image processing, all aspects of computational electromagnetics, and electromagnetic wave propagation in complex media.
  • Jean-Louis Coatrieux (LTSI) is Inserm Director of Research and Adjunct Professor at NJIT, USA. He has provided in BME well-recognized contributions in 3D image reconstruction and analysis, computer graphics and rendering, signal processing and modelling.
  • Jean-Claude Daubert (LTSI) is Professor and Honorary President of the French Society of Cardiology. He has invented and implemented the concept of cardiac resynchronisation therapy.
  • Jean-François Hélard (IETR) is Full Professor at INSA-Rennes and Deputy Director of IETR. Involved in several European and national research projects in the field of digital communications, he has provided widely recognized contributions on signal processing techniques for digital communications, such as multi-carrier modulation, space-time and MIMO systems, multi-user communications.
  • Eric Jamet (MSHB) is a professor of cognitive ergonomics at the University of Rennes 2. He is the head of the experimental psychology lab (one of the 4 teams composing the CRPCC) and the head of LOUSTIC, a multidisciplinary ICT Usage Lab. His research focuses on various issues related to the cognitive processing of complex documents and human-machine interaction: e-learning, multimedia and multimodality, user experience and ICT acceptance. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and managed many research projects with other laboratories or industrial partners.
  • Thomas Jensen (INRIA-Rennes) is Directeur de Recherche at INRIA-Rennes where he leads the group on program analysis since 1999. He has made major contribution to the foundations of static analysis and its application to the security of software. Recently, he has played a central role in the European FET-IP Mobius project's development of a proof-carrying code architecture based on certified static analysis and in the French National Security Agency's evaluation of the security of Java. Since 2006 he is scientific directr of the INRIA Rennes-Bretagne Atlantique center.
  • Jean-Marc Jezequel (IRISA) is a professor of Computer Science at the University of Rennes 1, and heads the INRIA Project-Team Triskell, a world-leader in the domain of Model Driven Software Engineering for component based, dynamically adaptable systems. He is the author of several books published by Addison-Wesley and of more than 150 publications in international journals and conferences. He was a key player in several European Netwroks of Excellence, including Artist2, AOSD-Europe, S-Cube and NeSSoS. He is a member of the steering committees of the AOSD and MODELS conference series and served on the editorial boards of IEEE TSE, SoSyM and JOT.
  • Anne-Marie Kermarrec (INRIA-Rennes) is Directeur de Recherche at INRIA-Rennes. She is the head of the ASAP research group and the Principal Investigator of the ERC Starting grant GOSSPLE (2008-2013).  Before joining INRIA in February 2004, she was with Microsoft Research in Cambridge since March 2000, and in A. Tanenbaum's group at the VU in Amsterdam in 1997. She is internationally recognized in the area of peer to peer systems, gossip-based algorithms, content distribution and social networks.
  • Ramesh Pyndiah (Telecom Bretagne) SMIEE, is full Professor at Telecom Bretagne and Head of the Signal and Communication department. His major contributions are in the area of block turbo codes. He was co-editor of special issues on turbo techniques (Eurasip and Annals of Telecom), TPC member of several major conferences on communications (ICC, Globecom, ECWT,..) and executive committee member of ICC'0, PIMRC'08 and ISTC (97,00,03 and 10). He chairs the IEEE ComSoc France chapter since 2000. He is recipient of the 2001 Blondel Medal (SEE).
  • Michel Raynal (IRISA) is a professor of Computer Science at University of Rennes 1. His main research interests concern the basic principles of distributed computing.  Professor Michel Raynal is a world-wide recognized expert in this domain.  He has authored 9 books  (Wiley, MIT Press, Morgan & Clapypool), more than 350 papers in int'l journals and conferences and received many "best paper" awards.  He has given lectures on distributed computing  all over the world and chaired more than 15 int'l conferences. He is a member of the Editotrial board of IEEE TC, IEEE TPDS  and JPD , and a member of the steering committee of several int'l  conferences.
  • Christian Roux (LATIM) is Senior Vice-President for Research and Innovation at Ecole des Mines Saint- Etienne. He has provided outstanding contributions to the field of image and information processing in medical and biological engineering (AIMBE Fellow 2001) and to the theory of functional shapes in medical imaging (IEEE Fellow 2005). He is the coordinator of IMIF Equipex project.
  • Ronan Sauleau (IETR) is a full professor at the University of Rennes 1. He has been involved is many national and European projects on antennas. Among those, he coordinates a network of Excellence on focusing systems supported by the European Science Foundation. He holds 5 patents, and has published 80 peer-reviewed journals papers and 200 publications in international conferences. He is CNRS Bronze medal 2008.
  • André Seznec (INRIA-Rennes) is Directeur de Recherche at INRIA has been working on computer architecture at IRISA/INRIA-RBA since 1983. He has made major contributions on vector memory systems, pipeline structures, multithreading and multicores and widely recognized contributions on caches structure and branch predictors.  Dr Seznec has been awarded an ERC advanced research grant in 2010, DAL, Defying Amdhal's Law.
  • Jean-Claude Simon (FOTON) is recipient of the Fabry-de Grammont award of the French Optical Society in recognition of his contributions to advances in semiconductor optical amplifiers for optical communication. He is presently recognized through several invited talks for his research on 2R and 3R all-optical regeneration. Since 2003 he is representing France at the European Management Committee of the international ECOC conference. He is co-leader of the GT3 working group of Allistene Alliance. He is author or co-author of approximately 200 journal and conference papers including some 25 invited talks, 10 patents, and 3 book chapters. He has tight connections to industry, particularly with France Telecom R&D where he has spent 25 years as a researcher, and presently as one of the two leaders for the creation of a Foton - Orange Labs joint laboratory.
  • Mario Sudholt (LINA) is a Professor in Computer Science at École des Mines de Nantes where he leads the Ascola team, a joint team with INRIA and LINA institutes that is a world leader in the foundations of Aspect-Oriented Programming, software composition, and its applications to distributed software systems. He has published over 80 publications at international peer-reviewed venues, is member of the steering committee of the AOSD and Software Composition conference series, and a member of the editorial board of the international journal Transactions in AOSD.

 

 

Contributing Teams

INRIA teams

 

The teams of the INRIA partner are joint with Ecole des Mines (ASCOLA team), with Supelec (CIDRE) and with the IRISA laboratory (the other teams). Here, we describe the teams that are headed by an INRIA researcher and the CIDRE team.
The other teams are described in sections 5.1.5 and. 5.1.6

  • ACES (Ubiquitous computing and Embedded system) (Leader: Michel Banâtre)
    The ACES project-team is concerned with software architecture for ubiquitous computing environment. It investigates new architecture model based on spatial programming. Recently, it has proposed the "physical coupled object" paradigm which allows to define integrity properties which relies physical objects. One strong result behind integrity property verification, is related to the definition of protection mechanisms, similar to dynamic capabilities in operating systems. Applications of such a result are in safety and security areas. ACES has a unique track record in start-up creation. ACES researchers were notably behind the creation of a joint laboratory with Texas Instruments in Rennes.
  • ALF (Amdahl's Law is Forever) (Leader: André Seznec)
    The ALF project-team regroups researchers in microarchitecture, software/compiler optimization, and real-time systems. Multicore processors are now becoming mainstream for both general-purpose and embedded computing. Within a decade it will become feasible to build 1000's core processor chips, but most applications will not be fully parallelized. The long-term goal of the ALF project-team is to allow the end-user to benefit from the 2020's many-core platforms. ALF addresses this issue through architecture design, compiler technology and performance prediction/guarantees. The team is recognized as world leader in branch prediction. André Seznec has been nominated senior ERC Fellow with the project Defying Amdahl's Law.

    ASAP is concerned with the theory, design and implementation of dynamic large-scale distributed systems. We are addressing the design and development of fully decentralized (peer to peer) protocols intended to provide novel solutions to network coding, video streaming, data management, Web search, recommendations systems, rumor dissemination, event notification and social networks.
